Navigating Pet Loss with Love – A Guest Post by Tracey from Paws of Comfort
Share
Hi everyone,
I just want to say what a pleasure it is to write this blog for Life of Riley Bakery.
I’m Tracey, a pet bereavement counsellor. I’ve experienced the heartbreak of losing a beloved pet myself, and through that journey, I’ve become passionate about supporting others through their own loss.
My Story: Life After Sunnie
Two years ago, I lost my heart dog, Sunnie.
She was full of love and joy — especially when laps and snacks were involved! When she was diagnosed with heart failure at age 11, it became harder for her to walk and breathe. Eventually, we had to say goodbye.
That first year was the hardest of my life.
But as time passed, I started thinking about how I could channel the unconditional love Sunnie gave me into something meaningful for others. Working in healthcare already, it felt like a natural step to train as a pet bereavement counsellor.
And so Paws of Comfort was born — a lifelong legacy to Sunnie and the love she shared.
Why Pet Loss Hits So Hard
Pet loss can come in many forms — from planned euthanasia, sudden death, rehoming, or even a missing pet. Whatever the cause, the grief is real and valid.
Our pets aren’t just pets.
They are our family, our best friends, our companions, our children.
Losing them leaves a deep, silent void — one that often affects not just us, but our other pets and family members too.
Yet, so often, people still hear that dreaded phrase:
“You’ll be okay — it’s only a pet.”
That comment can cut deeper than people realise. It’s exactly why speaking with someone who understands can make all the difference.
Grief Is Not Linear
There’s no right or wrong way to grieve.
There’s no timeline, no “shoulds.”
It’s not about moving on — it’s about carrying forward the love and warmth they gave us, and finding ways to live with that love still glowing inside.
Sometimes, something as simple as walking through the garden where your pet once played can feel impossible.
But with gentle, supported steps, done at your own pace, it can become possible again — and it can feel beautiful.
